I don't know what it is about blogging, but I only seem to be able to think of topics I'd like to blog about when I'm not physically able to blog. Is this what people call an "avoidance issue?"
Yeah. Anyway, I visited my favorite non-flurfy-yarn-pushing local yarn store--Simpactico Yarns--a few weeks ago and bought myself a few birthday presents: The new Rowan magazine (yep, the one with the absolutely bizarro yet oddly compelling photo story) and three skeins of Misti Alpaca laceweight in color 4050 (lilac). Better yet, I knew exactly what I wanted to use this yarn for: The Icarus shawl in the last issue of Interweave Knits.
I started the shawl shortly after purchasing the yarn, and everything is going along pretty well. I did have a couple of very bad knitting days involving not noticing extremely obvious errors (compounded by my lack of a lifeline as I'm too damn lazy to go root around in the stash for some suitable floss), but knock on wood, I think I've recoved my lace zen at this point. I have fourteen more rows to go in the body of the shawl before I begin the main lace patterning, and I DO plan to put in a lifeline before beginning that section. The shawl is going fairly quickly so far, and I love the pattern. The design is simple and elegant and does not suffer from the sort of excessive design elements that I often feel are present in shawl patterns. It looks like the designer, Miriam Felton, has done another shawl which I'll take a closer look at after finishing Icarus. Hopefully, pictures of my progress will be taken and posted soon--I think I have more avoidance issues with the digital camera.
On another front, I hope that the Boy remembers to get some parchment paper for me today. I really want to get my One Skein Secret Pal's package put together and sent out. Actually, I think I'll go ahead and end this rambling and make myself a to-do list for the rest of the day. I'll try to report back tomorrow.
